A pool deck is patio work with three extra jobs: it has to drain away from the water, stay grippy when it's wet, and respect the bonding and barrier rules that come with a pool. Which Finish Is Safe Around Water?
Wet concrete and bare feet decide this choice more than looks do. Broom finish is the default for a reason: the broom texture channels water and grips skin, and at $8 to $15 a square foot it's the budget answer. Exposed aggregate grips nearly as hard and hides wet footprints, though the pebbled surface splits opinions on barefoot comfort.
Stamped decks are the upgrade pick at $15 to $25 a square foot, and around a pool the sealer decision matters more than the pattern. A glossy sealer straight out of the bucket gets slick when wet, so on pool work we mix a grip additive into the sealer and lean toward patterns with texture relief. Color is worth a thought too. Light colors stay cooler under bare feet in the summer sun. Dark charcoal borders look sharp and run hot in July.

What Naperville Requires Around a Pool
The part nobody tells you: the concrete around a pool is part of the electrical system. The National Electrical Code as adopted by Naperville requires the perimeter surface within 3 feet of the pool wall to be bonded, commonly done with a copper conductor set 18 to 24 inches off the inside pool wall, 4 to 6 inches below subgrade, connected to the pool structure at a minimum of four points. Tear out a deck without accounting for that grid and the new deck has a problem buried under it. We plan the demolition and the pour around it; it has to be intact before concrete covers it.
Permits run through the city's Civic Access portal, the same system as driveways. Every in-ground pool in Naperville requires a permit, and the barrier around it, fence height, self-closing gates, latch placement, is reviewed under the 2024 Swimming Pool and Spa Code the city now uses for plan review. Where deck meets coping, the two never pour as one. A flexible joint separates the deck slab from the pool structure so the slab can move without prying at the pool wall. Can you replace my pool deck without damaging the pool?
That is the whole trick of the job. We saw-cut inside the coping joint, break the old deck out in sections working away from the shell, and protect the pool, coping, and any exposed plumbing through demolition and the pour.
Is stamped concrete too slippery for a pool deck?
It does not have to be. Sealer sheen is the lever: a matte or satin sealer with grip additive holds traction that a high-gloss coat trades away for shine. Ask us to wet the sample board at the on-site visit; your bare hand will tell you more than any spec sheet.
Do I need a permit to replace a pool deck in Naperville?
The pool needed a permit when it went in, and the barrier rules come back into play any time fencing or gates change. A deck-only replacement is not clearly classified on the city's pages, so we get the city's answer for your specific job before we dig.
